Chapter Fifteen

When Alexandra arrived back at the house, Stokes met her with the news that Lord Chisholm had called to see Niall. She stared at the butler in stunned amazement.

“Lord Chisholm?” she said.

“Yes, my lady. Do you happen to know where His Lordship is?”

“His Lordship was in the garden when last I saw him, Stokes,” she replied. “You might send someone to look for him there.”

“Thank you, my lady. I will do so immediately.”

Alexandra had every intention of joining Niall and the perifidious Chisholm as soon as she changed her torn dress and filthy shoes. She hastened upstairs to her bedroom and prodded Meg to dress her as quickly as possible. She had reached the second floor on her way to the first when she was intercepted by Mrs. Moreton, who had a problem with one of the chambermaids she needed to consult Alexandra about immediately.

Alexandra did her best to listen patiently to her housekeeper and respond to the problem. At last she was free to descend to the first floor and ask one of the footmen where she could find Niall.

“I believe he is in the office, my lady,” the footman replied. “Lord Chisholm was with him.”

Alexandra smiled an abstracted thank-you to the young footman and turned toward the family dining room, which would lead her to the estate office.

The door was closed. Drawing a deep breath, Alexandra thrust the door open and walked in.

Niall was standing at one of the windows with his back to the room. He was alone.

He heard the door open and swung around, a frown on his face. “Alec,” he said in surprise. His frown lifted.

The scratch on his cheek looked red and angry. She made a mental note to make sure he had it properly cleaned and anointed.

She closed the door behind her. “Stokes told me that Chisholm was here. What did he want, Niall?”

The line between his brows came back.

“What did he learn from Harvey?” she went on. “Is he still threatening to take us to court about the marriage?”

He said, “Chisholm came here to make me an offer to buy Glen Alpin.”

Alexandra felt her mouth drop open. That was the last thing she had expected to hear. “He wanted to buy your lands in Scotland?”

Niall’s frown deepened. “Yes. He was so kind as to tell me that since I was now a rich English lord, I should be glad to rid myself of Glen Alpin.”

Alexandra realized that Niall was furious.

She asked slowly, “Did he say anything about the Jockey Club’s claim to my father’s money?”

Niall lifted an ironic eyebrow. “Oh yes. He said that if I agreed to sell him Glen Alpin, he would drop the Jockey Club claim.”

“What did you say to him?” Alexandra asked.

“I threw him out of the house,” Niall replied.

Alexandra stared at her husband in bewilderment. “This doesn’t make any sense,” she finally said.

“It doesn’t make any sense to me either,” he returned grimly. He moved away from the window in the direction of the desk. “Come and sit down.
